Korean Wave Star Kwon SangWoo declared that he'll conquer Japan in the rooster year.

Now Fuji Tv is broadcasting his work "Stairs to Heaven", and it's so popular. Kwon SangWoo will put DVD on sale, and taking it as the beginning of conquering Japan, then his films will also show, this year, he'll guide a new tide of "Korean hot wind". Rating of MBC drama "Sad Sonata" on 3th is 19.4%(TNS), it's the highest rating since it broadcasted.

Kwon SangWoo's expression of eyesight has increased rating of "Sad Sonata".

The result of TNS national rating is 16.8%, it has gone up since last week.

Facing to Kim HeeSun who resumed her eyesight, Kwon SangWoo's staring expression of eyesight has made audience weeping.

Before the drama broadcasting, Kwon SangWoo ever left a message in "Sad Sonata" homepage that "I feel excited for shooting this work", and also in the preview meeting on JAN.3th he expressed that "From now on, I want to become a real actor and get people's acceptance."

During the outside shooting from Jan.27th night to 28th dawn, Kwon SangWoo has changed indeed, he has got applause from friends and shooting staff by his status of a real actor.

Actor Kwon SangWoo, who welcomed his 30 year old in new year, has made special preparation in mind for the broadcast of new drama "Sad Sonata".

On 3th 6:30pm, in the press conference of MBC drama "Sad Sonata", Kwon SangWoo expressed that,"No matter how I could be in drama, I only pay my attention to my acting."

In the film "Wild Beast" produced by POPCORN, Kwon SangWoo will challenge a new part---a brave cop. "Wild beast", directed by new director Kim SeungJoo, is a black movie about three men, now Kwon SangWoo has been confirmed as one of the three leading actors.

Kwon SangWoo, who's devoting into shooting MBC drama "Sad Sonata" that will broadcast next Jaunary, appeared suddently in shooting locale of drama "Sorry, I love you".

Kwon SangWoo's surprised appearance is all for supporting his close friend So JiSub who's shooting the rain scene (episode 13). Then, Kwon SangWoo was in the gymnasium nearby, and when he heard that So JiSub was shooting nearby he went there immediately. He watched carefully about So JiSub's scene of being caught in the rain. Memorial for MBC mini drama "Sad Sonata" top stars Kim HeeSun and Kwon SangWoo costared will set up in ChangDong, Seoul in middle of 2006.

One of productions for "Sad Sonata" KimJongHak Production expressed on 20th that, "Sad Sonata" memorial in Changdong, Seoul will start to build next year and complete in 2006. The memorial will be the first one in Korean drama history and it will be imitative of shooting places of drama such as New York, Jeolla Bukdo and so on and make up mini models. Cost for it will be 10 billion won and bronzes , clothes, things used for Kim HeeSun, Kwon SangWoo and other parts in drama will all be exhibited.

The leading actor of "Sad Sonata" that will broadcast next January Kwon SangWoo, his strong will of insisting on acting in spite of neck hurt has warmed the whole shooting team.

"Sad Sonata", tells a love and friendship story among Jun Young(acted by Kwon SangWoo), Hye In (acted by Kim HeeSun) and Gun Woo(acted by Yeon JungHoon), and it has started to shoot scenes of Kwon SangWoo in Jeolla Bukdo since Dec.7th.

The scenes is that Kwon SangWoo fought against kidnappers for find Kim HeeSun kidnapped, and shooting continued from 7pm to 4am the next day setting a scene of old depot in American village.

For completing the fight scene more ture, Kwon SangWoo hurt his neck while shooting the action scenes under guiding of action guidance Jang . But he expressed his strong will and insisted on acting till early morning the next day.

Guidance Jang said," his egregious attention and will, has made the whole staff and actors feel very tense and warm."

Kwon SangWoo,as the new representative of Korean stars, his official visit to Japan was refused by the Haneda airport
for avoiding the sudden accident.

This April when "yonsama" Bae YongJoon entered Japan it had occurred a disturbance in the airport, is encountered as if the airport "nightmare". Because the popularity of Kwon SangWoo suddenly rised in Japan recently, many people worried Kwon SangWoo also can bring the similar situation, "please goes to the bigger Narita airport", the official invitation to Kwon SangWoo indicated like this by Fuji TV. So, Kwon SangWoo decided to change the flight schedule for the line of inchon - Narita instead of the Gimpo - Haneda line at first on 12th to enter Japan.

Got the message from a concerned personnel of the ISTAR company. This concerned personnel expressed on 9th that "recently the Fuji TV expected it will have the large number of fans to build up. So explained in the facsimile "because the aspect of Haneda airport is small for entering, so move to the Narita airport. It is expected to have at least 1,000 Japanese fans rush to the airport." During shooting CF of cosmetic "thefaceshop", Kwon SangWoo rolled for 3 hours on the hills with his female partner In JungSoo.

The snow farm , at the height of 1700m, is 50km far from the famous holiday place Queen City in Southern Land of New Zealand where films such as "The lord of the ring","Explore in South Pole" and so on shooted.And it will take one hour by car, then take 30 minutes by sledge on the road not repaired, finally, we could arrive in the vacant field.

For shooting the CF, Kwon SangWoo and In JungSoo shooted the scene of rolling down from the hill for 3 hours since the dawn with staff. In the cold weather about 22 degree under zero, their expression got high evaluations from others.

After rolling down onto the snowfield, they had a snow fight like a couple of lovers, then finished the shooting.

After completing the shooting, Kwon SangWoo joked that, " I even don't know how many times I have rolled down with JungSoo. Now there's all dark in front of me." And JungSoo answered, " It seemed like to embrace with a snowman, and the time flyed fast."

People around said that, "in such a cold weather, it's so suitable to the figure of couples in real life that embracing and sharing temperature each other. It expresses the figure of a couple full of love."

On the other hand, the leading actor and actress Kwon SangWoo and Kim HeeSun are also the main reason for improving the exporting price. We will decide to sign a contract valued at 3 billion won this week; if it includes other interests such as copyrights for parts, the price of contract will be higher."

The production expressed that Taiwan TV GTV that wants to import "Sad Sonata" also increased the exporting price, and copyright aboard will be over 3.5 to 4.5 billion won, so the interest will be 1.5 billion won.

Because of Song SeungHeon involvement in the military service problem thus unable to act in the drama, the production co. showed "We have already confirmed Yeon JungHoon to replace Song SeungHeon's role." More on 'Sad Love Song'...

'Sad Love Song' will go into production without SSH on 10/23 (Korean location filming). They are building an outdoor set in very windy (? not sure of this one) Da Chung Ho area, but most of the (in Korea) filming will be in Chun Book Gun San area in Jun La Do.

The contract has not been signed but MBC and the production company agreed to air 'Sad Love Song' starting 1/12/05 in Wednesday/Thursday slot and if aired as planned, 20 episodes total ending on 3/17/05.

Because of SSH military scandal, the drama 'Sad Love Song' has been in jeopardy and looks like SSH will quit in the middle. However, the production company sent an appeal to government and clinging to hope.

The production companies, KSW, and KHS all attended the production announcement on 10/21 but SSH was no show. That day, including 90 Japanese reporters, there were 500 reporters total creating chaos.

'Sad Love Song' went into production on the day of the announcement. The main characters' younger (when they were children) scenes will be filmed first. Since KSW and KHS will be leaving for US on 10/29 to start filming there, if the government does not change it's position, they need to look for replacement (for SSH). The production company is in talk with 4 possible actors just in case.

The representative of the production company said, "We sent an appeal to the government on 10/22 asking (to make it possible) for SSH to finish filming until 12/04 then enlist. Because SSH is an international star, if he is not in the drama, marketing (of the drama) will suffer including in Japan." According to him, 5 Japanese companies already promised to invest 30 million (in Won I think), however, if no SSH, 3 companies will pull out and 1 company will reduce it's investment.

I am very worried about my role since I have to play a singer as well as a blind person, something I've never experienced.

Actress Kim Hee-sun (picture) was cast as the blind Hye-in, who sings at a nightclub in a U.S. military campsite, in the soap opera "Sad Love Song".

Around 500 people, including local and international reporters, drama production staff, and fans, gathered together at the drama's press conference and her music video preview, which were held at Megabox, Gangnam, Seoul on October 20.

Kim, who wore an elegant black dress pants, continually beamed and repeatedly said,I am very honored and lucky to have this role.

Hye-in first falls in love with Jun-yeong (by actor Kwon Sang-woo), who is also from the campsite, but departs from him as she and her mother leave for the U.S. Afterwards, she falls in love with Geun-woo in the U.S. Jun-yeong and Geun-woo are best friends. They are so close that either one would sacrifice his life for the other. One of the core components of dramas that hit the cord of the audiences, a triangle relationship, is well structured.

Kim Jonghak Production and two other joint productions will finish producing"Sad Love Song" with an approximate seven-billion won budget, and then will sell the exclusive right of ground airing to a ground broadcasting company. This means that nobody knows yet which broadcasting company will air it and when it will be shown.

I have acted many times in the triangle relationship, so I don't worry about that. Also, I practiced playing a blind person by watching movies with blind people in them.

However, her biggest hurdle is her singing ability.

I am pretty bad at singing. However, my role is a singer, and the two male figures are all musicians. Singing is the messenger that delivers love to each other in this drama. So, I am practicing with a singer to improve my singing ability so that it will be good enough for me to sing the theme song " Your Love"

Kim Hee-sun is filming the Chinese movie "The Myth" with Jackie Chan. I have two more months until I finish the movie, and then I will concentrate exclusively on "Sad Love Song" , said Kim.

KSW was doing a photo shoot with the photographer, Cho Sae Hyun, for ‘2004 Letters from Angels'. While shooting, KSW's partner (2 month old baby) suddenly urinated surprising KSW. According to the photographer, “I think the baby was nervous and (we) were surprised by his sudden reaction”, “But, KSW rather than being annoyed was more concerned for the baby and said ‘I think the baby was surprised'”.

Bullfighter Kwon Sang Woo 'Ole, Ole' To Film CF

'Momjjang' Kwon Sang Woo became romantic bullfighter.

Kwon Sang Woo fought with 4 bulls in Spain to film Anycall CF.

Directed by well known bullfight director, Jose, holding only a cell phone KSW manipulated (or evaded) 4 charging bulls.

In order to work with the real bullfight bulls, KSW even attended a local bullfighter school to learn. Except for the extreme close up scenes with the bull, he handled all the other action sequences without any problems. Even performed wire action scene courageously.

Despite the fact the he did not have a lot of time to practice, the show of momjjang’s excellent aptitude for sports had the director, Jose, shouting Ole Ole (in encouragement).

Kwon Sang Woo-Lee Hyo Ri, Athens Olympic torch relay runners on 7th.
 

Representing actors and singers, sexy top male and female stars, Kwon Sang Woo (28) and Lee Hyo Ri (25), are becoming 'Olympic couple'.

On 7th, they will be running in the Athens Olympic torch relay in Seoul.

It will start 12:30 in the afternoon at the Seoul Olympic Garden's Olympic Tower, going around city of Seoul, and end at Seoul City Hall.

KSW and LHR will be running 6:50 PM and 7:00 PM respectively (description of the area they are running so I’ll omit) for 400 meters holding the torch.

Another person will be carrying the torch in between the two stars, but this is their third appearance together since Try and Anycall CF. However, they will not be running together since the torch is carried individually.

After the relay is finished at the City Hall around 7:10 PM , starting 8:00 PM, in front of the City Hall, there will be Anycall concert featuring Bi and etc.

Kwon Sang Woo Wall Climbing and Drinking Aminoup

Reminicent of the movie, Matrix, the CF for Aminoup drink has Kwon Sang Woo (a model for the product)
climbing a wall up and down as well as dancing.
This unique and different CF production has generated a lot of interest.

Drinking Aminoup and walking down a street, KSW dances up a storm using the wall as a stage.
Thus introducing a concept that in everyday life (at anytime or anyplace), the product is a “body rhythm and mood enhancing drink.”

For realistic portrayal, a round set was used to turn in order to film KSW climbing the wall.
It was not easy to turn a giant set 90 degrees. And to ensure safety of the model, they rehearsed for 5 hours.
In the first Aminoup commercial, KSW showed incredible flexibility by bending his waist way over.
KSW spent 17 hours inside a giant round set (operated by a crane) dancing, showing true professionalism.

HJW's eyes seriously injured..."Lessons to be a Priest" shooting comes to a complete halt

Korean horror flick spokesperson/actress Ha Ji Won, is currently suffering from a serious eye injury and is facing danger of losing sight. On the 1st of May,she was rushed to a hospital in Kangnam to receive treatment and on the 2nd, on the way back, she suddenly experienced a sharp pain in her eye, and was send back to the hospital again.

The doctor expressed that the eye white is torn, and the whole eyes is extremely swollen. And because he cannot come to a clear cause to the problem, further examination is needed to make a judgement. About this incident, HJW says that ever since the 30th, having finished the shooting at Daegu, her eyes started swelling and the pain is extremely unbearable.

Because of sudden event, all progress for "Lessons to be a Priest" has come to a complete stop, and because of her unstable condition, there is no gurantee as to when the filming wil restart, and is HJW's condition shows no improvement, the filming may have to be cancelled eventually.

Kwon Sang Woo almost got hurt?

The fact that the star from"Stairways to Heaven" Kwon Sang Woo almost got hurt in China days ago, is finally made known to the public.

Having finished the fashion show event held by Andre Kim on the 21st, KSW and CJW attended a circus performance on the 22nd.The reason behind KSW's near injury was because of the "short sword shooting" item during the performance. The performance was to get audiences to participate and act as markers and not get hit by the short swords when they are shot. One of the performers approached KSW and asked "You are a Korean?" and dragged him to the stage. Andre Kim, who was beside KSW at that time, advised him against it but he went ahead with it. Of course, the performers did not know KSW was an popular actor from Korea at all.

They then tied up KSW, and when they were about to fire the short swords, one of the performers went up to him and said "Your heart is skipping so fast. I'm going to have to blindfold you." Having covered his face, the performers did not actually throw the small swords out, instead they went up and poked the knife hardly around him, making him feel as though its real. Up till then, the audience cooperated and deliberately made noise which intensified the horror.

The staff members were extremely nervous but relieved that nothing happened. They praised KSW for his courage of daring to go up on the stage because many of the audiences did not dare participate that day.

Kwon Sang-woo Melts Hearts in China, his Shanghai Visit April 16-18



Kwon Sang-woo showed just how attractive he in a fashion show of the world¡¯s best designer, Giorgio Armani, held in Shanghai, China on Saturday. In order for Kwon Sang Woo who is well known in Korea as 'momjjang' to make it into Hollyood, he has started his English conversation lessons since April 7 with a Canadian female who is hired as his manager.

The role of this English speaking manager is different from Kwon Sang Woo's current Korean manager. She will be interacting in English with Kwon Sang Woo day in day out. This is a fundamental step for his career move into Hollywood. Even play station and computer games are used in the learning process.

Kwon Sang Woo (28) and Ha Ji Won (25) will be shooting a unique concept for the teaser poster of the movie.

The two leading stars for the movie <Shin Bu Su Ob> which will be swinging into production mid of this month, each will be putting on the Catholic priest robe and wedding dress respectively for the poster shoot on Apirl 9. A Catholic bride in a wedding dress doing daily chores, this does not look right! However, this seemingly wrong sketch will be used for the teaser poster but it will be portrayed in a light-hearted manner.

The titile of the movie implies on two subjects. In <Shin Bu Su Ob>, the 'Shin Bu' refers to both Catholic Priest as well as the Bride. Kwon Sang Woo is playing role of the missionary student aspiring to be a priest whereas Ha Ji Won is playing the role of a tomboyish girl who returns from abroad after she was being dumped at the altar.

Kwon Sang Woo already did his fitting for priest outfit last month. The design of the wedding dress will accentuate Ha Ji Won and it is now in production.

<Shin Bu Su Ob> is a comedy in which Kwon Sang Woo's character, Kyu Sik, is a model missionary student and he tries to baptise Ha Ji Won's character Bong Hee but she is a non-believer.

Top star Kwon Sang Woo has decided to move into his new home and when his would-be neighbours came to know of the news, they decided to call for an emergency meeting which in turn has aroused curiosity in the neighbourhood. Apparently it is due to the popularity of Kwon Sang Woo that they decided to meet and think of a viable plan when he moves into the apartment.

Kwon Sang Woo has recently planned to move into the Yeoksam of Kangnam District in Seoul and it is a high residential apartment of an average floor area of 60 sq m. Since this is a prime residential, there are only 3 blocks and therefore news of his move spread quickly. And apparently there were some female fans who had spotted Kwon Sang Woo when he went to view the apartment which created some commotion.

a sorrowful lover. Kwon Sang Woo and Kim Min Jung (22) will be left with a long after effect when their love crosses in the music video 'Love Is', a soundtrack in Leessang's special album. In the music video, they are childhood sweethearts and an unforgettable first love long after they parted.

Kwon Sang Woo-Lee Hyo Ri  did not even get to see each other's face while filming this CF in Australia.

Kwon Sang Woo-Lee Hyori did not even come face to face with each other during the CF filming in Australia.

Kwon Sang Woo(28) and Lee Hyori (25) were on a 5-day 4-night schedule since March 12 filming of AnyCall CF in Sydney Australia.

Although they were filming similar CF, they did not even get to meet face to face with one another. In the first place, their departure for Australia has attracted media's attention and 'scandal warning' sign was raised. There is still speculation about them even after their return.

The spokesperson of Kwon Sang Woo's agency Istar, Lee Joo Young, stated that Kwon Sang Woo and Lee Hyori did not meet one another. They were filming the cellular phone CF separately and thus do not have any reason to be together. Kwon Sang Woo arrived Sydney a day later than Lee Hyori. They were staying at different hotels and there was no chance meeting each other. Lee Hyori's representative also clearly indicated that 'did not meet Kwon Sang Woo during the filming'.

The reason that both Kwon Sang Woo and Lee Hyori were filming for the same brand CF abroad is enough to arouse interest from the media.

To avoid possible rumours, the filming of Try CF last month was carried out without publicity. As a result, signboards for their respective agencies were used for this overseas assignment to ensure clear-cut line to be drawn between them.

The first rendezvous of the two hottest and sexist stars in Sydney filming Samsung AnyCall CF, but separate hotels for fear of wagging tongues!

Korea's hottest pair of 'sexy star' Lee Hyori (25) and Kwon Sang Woo (28) are reuniting in Sydney, Australia.

It has drawn attention that Lee Hyori left for Sydney on March 11 and Kwon Sang Woo to follow suit on March 12. The two flew to Sydney as the exclusive contract models for the filming of the Samsung AnyCall CF .

They were sensitive towards the rumours escalating whle filming the Try CF in Cheju Island. Before the filming was publicised, both not only requested the CF agency for their shoots to be done separately but also to pay extra care when compiling the shoots.

AnyCall now leveled that it is its policy to have separate CF filmings for Lee Hyori and Kwon Sang Woo. Though each CF created will be set for
separate broadcast, the filmings will be compiled accordingly, on the other hand, there is a possibility that the filming will have various results.

This Sydney trip does not mean anything to Lee Hyori and Kwon Sang Woo. Both declared saying "We are just doing our job in accordance to exclusive model contract." They have been confronted by scandals since last May filming Try ad in a number of locations and are taking the careful approaching during frequent meetings and in so doing to avoid scandals, they cannot get to know each other. However, since their successive portrayal as couple has ended, their being abroad together has definitely attracted much attention.

It is seldom that a jingle gives a picture of a pair of good-looking stars
so harmonizing and eye-catching.

The major characters which made up of the duet are 'monjjang' Kwon Sang Woo (28) and 'eoljjang' Kim Jung Hwa (21).

Their recent collaborations in the 2 TV commercials for the casual clothing brand Maru were refreshing. The photo shoot in Hanoi, Vietnam last autumn was their second collaboration. This time in particular, the theme song is played as the background music for the ad.

Since March 1, TV has been airing their Maru commercial with the seaside of China's Hainan Island as the background depicting a pair of loving couple together with sounds of acoustic guitar and beautiful humming. On Feb 24 afternoon, Kwon Sang Woo (28) goes for a 3-day 2-night itinerary to the Cheju Island.

He did not go for the initial 10-day R&R in the U.S. because it is
physically exhausting on long haul flight and so there he is in Cheju Island. After his charismatic performance in the SBS drama [Stairs to Heaven], he has been fulfilling a number of CF shoots which left him barely 4 hours of sleep each day.

This is Kwon Sang Woo's most recent KTF (Fimm) CF in collaboration with budding actress Hong Su-Hyun (the supporting actress who played Se-Ra in Sangdo, Let's Go To School). The CF which premiered on Feb 7, 2004 in which both KSW & HSH played a couple was really well received by viewers.
 
An excited HSH watching the movie "Taegukgi" (The Korean Flag Waves) via KSW's cellphone. The un-amused and worried looking KSW asks "Do you always do this?" (On-line viewing charges are exorbitant!). After hearing what KSW said, HSH just laughs impishly. However, the atmosphere takes a 180 degrees turn when the cellphone plays Kim Bum Soo's "Missing You" which is also the OST of the drama "Stairways to Heaven". It seems that KSW has subscribed to an "unlimited use" plan. As such he laughs and says "Well, just enjoy, there's no limit!"

KSW's lively performance instantly gives the entire CF a refreshing take.
The production team has been scouting for a cute girl to pair off with KSW. HSH who is working on the drama "King's Women" was selected.
 
Both KSW & HSH get along really well throughout the entire CF shoot, and it seems far better off than KSW's previous KTF partners, among them are actress Han EunJin, Han JiHye.

Following the completion of "Stairways to Heaven", "Killer" CF Schedules await Kwon Sang Woo

"Drama has ended but there is unlikely going to be any R&R anytime soon!"
The CF commitments are scheduled so closely to one another that his assistants have to keep him on track. Although the shooting for "Stairways to Heaven" has been completed, the drama has not ended yet but apparently CF wars have already began.
KSW has already started his schedule following the completion of the shooting of "Stairways to Heaven",

-On Feb 4, he will be leaving for Cheju Island to do the "Try" CF with Lee Hyori.
-Feb 5, he will be arriving in Seoul for the CF shoot of "Biltmore" Spring collection
-Feb 9, he will continue to do another shoot for "Hite" beer CF. He will return to his home on Feb 11 and subsequently preparing to leave for New Zealand for the "Maru" CF shoot.

After completion of the 4 CFs, he is scheduled to return home to rest and on Feb 20, he will be leaving for the States. It is believed that there are no commitments during the 6 days before his departure but it doesn't mean that he will be able to rest as well.

Kwon Sangwoo made the filming of Stairs to Heaven last episode a teary one...


"I'm sorry that i couldn't go with you."

Top Star Kwon Sangwoo made the last episode of "Stairs to Heaven" a teary one. Kwon Sangwoo with Choi Jiwoo on January 30th filmed the highlight scene of the last epsiode (20th episode) and showed tremendous acting skills in the scene. He gained apraise by the staff saying "he's a mellow expert.".

On this day from 2 in the afternoon for about 2 hrs and 30 minutes, the story of the scene that was filming was the highlight of Choi Jiwoo dying on Kwon Sangwoo's back. Kwon Sangwoo while carrying Choi Jiwoo on his back said "Don't forget me..." and when Jungsuh dropped her head without any energy he said "Jungsuh ya..." and cried. On this day he put everything into his acting and really cried a lot. it was different from any another acting. He really did a good job in acting to point where he couldn't believe that he really acted this out.

One of the "Stairs to Heaven" staff said "Because Sangwoo cried so sadly, all the staff cried too." After the filming was done he had a hard time controlling the feelings he had for the drama. "Now he's an expert in mellow acting."

Kwon Sang Woo Buys Mom an Apartment

"My mother worked hard as a housekeeper" said Kwon Sangwoo. Awhile ago, Kwon Sangoo bought his mother an apartment as a gift. "now i need to bring home a wife" said KSW.

"Mom, please don't shed anymore tears" said "number 1 son" Kwon Sangwoo(28) to his "number 1 mom", Hong Chasun (60). He said this as he revealed his present on New Years.

Kwon Sangwoo saved up the money he has made on his recent drama to buy his mother the apartment. Whenever KSW was interviewed, it became a habit for him to say "my dream is to buy my mom a car" and now, he can keep that promise.

"I gave her money, but she never bought the car and said she was going to save the money" so, Kwon Sangwoo bought his mother the apartment instead.

During the opening of his film, "Miracle On the Han", KSW brought his mother as his guest to the Seoul CineCity for the opening. During the ending credits, when he saw his name come up on the screen, KSW felt his emotions bubbling up inside of him. His mother said "I'm so proud that so many people and love my Sangwoo...but Sangwoo, why did you have to get hit so many times?" When KSW heard this, he chocked back his tears.

Even though he looks like the type who would be the son of a very wealthy family, Kwon Sangwoo grew up in a struggling family. Only eight months after his birth, his father left this world, and Sangwoo was left with no memories of his dad and only pictures to look back on. When his mother was busy working, there was always his brother, Sangmyung (33), taking care of him.

Even though he cannot make the waterstains on his mother's hands, caused by hard work, go away, he has always given his mother la love that would even overfill a garage [that sounded better in korean... ]

New Film Looks at Life and Violence in High School in the Past

Teenage boys always want to look cool, do something forbidden and sometimes long for romance, but the reality is they are only expected to be good students. Bruce Lee, porn magazines, FM radio programs and a guitar were among the pop icons for boys in high school in the late 1970s in Korea. A recent local movie successfully not only depicts these nostalgic memories but also the failures, pains and injustice they go through.

The movie ``Maljukgori Chanhoksa (The Spirit of Jeekeundo _ Once Upon a Time in High School),'' which opened Friday, is a story about friendship, love and violence that high school students experienced in the late 1970s.

Well known for his previous romance movie ``Kyolhonun Michin Chisida (Marriage Is a Crazy Thing), in 2002, director Yoo Ha also wrote the screenplay of this film. The noted poet who also spent his adolescence in the 1970s said the story is largely based on his own teenage experiences in an interview with a local film magazine.

Played by actor Kwon Sang-woo, who appeared in 'Tonggapnaegi Kwawehagi [My Tutor Friend]in 2003, high school student Hyon-su ends up being transferred to Chungmon High School in the affluent Kangnam area of Seoul because his mother has an eye on the promising value of the land.

On his first day at school, his unwitting failure to follow the dress code rewards him with hits from a baseball bat from his teacher. He thinks his worst fears have come true.

The teachers swear and occasionally hit the students for their edification, of course. They claim they are only doing this for their best interests for them to get a good education and entrance into prestigious universities, but their encouragements come in the form of verbal barbed wire filled with insults.

A criminal or enterprising businessman in the making, one of Hyon-su¡¯s friends sells porn magazines to his classmates while next to sex, violence excites young boys who idolize action movie star Bruce Lee, practicing his moves during break times.

On the other side of the coin, boys like Hyon-su, who are too shy to confess their secret love for someone, turn coy and resort to sending love letters to radio stations in hopes of reaching the girls of their dreams. But things turn sour when the girl he loves falls for his friend Wu-sik. Hyon-su sinks into an identity crisis, stuck in the middle of adolescent confusion and pain.

"I vowed not to act as a high school student in a movie again. But after I read the scenario for this movie, I changed my mind" ,Kwon said at a news conference.

He added that he used to be like the character Hyon-su himself when he was around his age. He also loved a girl a year older than him, became easily jealous, and sometimes fought school rivals.

As the title implies, the film is inspired by Bruce Lee and features scenes from his classic " Fist of Fury " as well as Hyon-su's narration on Lee's martial art of Jeet keun do. Those in their 40s will be happy to relive what it meant to be alive in high school love and war in the 1970s.

Cruel, yet Unusually Popular: 800,000 Viewers on Opening Weekend

Director Yu Ha's film 'Maljuk-geori Janhoksa (The Cruel History of Maljuk Street) has drawn nearly 800,000 moviegoers since it opened last Friday.


Thanks to the film's success, Kwon Sang-woo, the star of the romance/action film set in a high school in 1978, has received a guaranteed contract of W300 million for his next picture, "Shinbu Sueop (Bride Education)",but now, his price is whatever he asks it to be. In fact, there are some newer film companies offering as much as W400 million for his services.
Han Ga-in plays the role of Eun-ju, who resembles 1978 high school boy heartthrob Olivia Hussey. Her character finds herself between Hyeon-su (Kwon Sang-woo), a model student who transferred to the school, and Woo-shik (Lee Jeong-jin), a tougher sort.

They are all friends, but eventually, problems arise due to the diametrically opposed personalities of the male students. Han Ga-in, who was lucky enough to shoot kiss scenes with both actors in the film, admitted that Kwon was the better kisser of the two. When asked which man she would chose, Han laughed and answered that like Eun-ju, she would be attracted to the tough guy, Woo-shik (Lee), who could rescue her from danger, but that as she grew older, she would prefer the more refined Hyeon-su (Kwon).

'High School' full of innocence, pain...

Director Yu Ha's new film a heartbreaking story of life back in 1978

The new film "Once Upon a Time in High School" opening this Friday begins with a line from "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do" by Bruce Lee: "A true fighter never looks back but only goes forward."

Poet-turned-director Yu Ha is no true fighter then. After introducing this line from his hero of youth, he looks back at his high school days when innocence was buried alive and pain was swallowed whole to craft a heartbreaking story that reveals him to be a true artist instead.

The impulse to recreate the past, particularly the 1970s and '80s, has fueled a series of lighthearted hits such as "Bet on My Disco" and "Conduct Zero" in recent years, feeding nostalgia for an age when "life was bad but people were good."

Yu, who took aim at the institution of marriage in his previous work "Marriage is a Crazy Thing," bears in mind that life was neither as beautiful nor as romantic as we now remember healed by the passage of time. "Once Upon a Time in High School" is one part nostalgia for two parts criticism and hesitates between the two poles to create an anguishing experience.

The film revolves around the fading scars of Hyun-soo (kwon Sang-woo), who goes to high school near Maljuk Street, the area around Yangjae Station in Gangnam in the 1970 and '80s before the development boom. (The Korean title directly translates into "The Cruel History of Maljuk Street.")

The year is 1978 and the worst excesses of "Yusin education" are rampant. Dressed alike in black uniforms and sporting the same short haircuts, the students are routinely beat forced to run around the campus. Drill instructors in military fatigues patrol the grounds with sticks.

The boundary between the military and the civilian becomes blurred as all of society is militarized. The students learn to submit to injustice as part of life and become spiritually impoverished. Forced to build up their "masculinity" to survive, their humanity comes crashing down.

To make matters worse, Hyun-soo falls in love. He finds a savior in Eun-joo (Han Ga-in), whom he sees on a bus, but she prefers the confident Woo-sik (Lee Jung-jin) to the shy Hyun-soo. "What I worked so hard to get, he got so easily," Hyun-soo says with a tear as Woo-sik and Eun-joo kiss at a dance hall.

An interesting aspect of the film is the way Yu balances his literary and cinematic instincts. He dredges up a rich roster of supporting characters and fleshes them out to be more than mere caricatures. No "fat guy" for comic effect here. Such literary stubbornness pushes the running time to 116 minutes but constructs a stronger narrative.

Yet Yu also generates a cinematic payoff by staging a rooftop fight worthy of Bruce Lee. The film winds toward its climax when Hyun-soo finds his purpose in life in beating a bully. (The climax may come a little earlier for female viewers when Kwon decides to shuck off his shirt and show off his muscles for the training.)

Perhaps a sign of the passage of time is the maturity to avoid pat conclusions. In the film, Hyun-soo attacks the bully from behind like a coward. Woo-sik disappears one day, and we never hear from him again. An encounter on a bus is the last that we see of Eun-joo. Left with a complicated feeling, we can only hope that more poets and novelists become directors.

Those who were second-year high school students in 1978 would have been born in 1961. They would be 43 today. If film is a form of communication, for those in their teens and 20s who comprise the majority of film audiences today, "Once Upon a Time in High School" is a chance to understand members of the 386 generation that seem so authoritarian, irrational and no better than those they fought against.

In a film so full of distress, the most memorable moments are the small traces of beauty such as sending a postcard to a radio program or boarding a train bound for Chuncheon with an acoustic guitar. Yu called the film a "last dedication to the 386 generation." It is a moving ode full of innocence, pain and beauty that never flowered.
